# Cache settings

The shared cache is on by default. An admin can change it in the **Shared cache**
tab on the **Runners** page of the Trunk web app. This page shows the settings
and who can change them.

## Where the settings apply

The tab shows one row for the **Organization default** and one row for each
repository override. To change a row, click **Edit**.

| Level | What it controls |
| - | - |
| Organization default | The settings for every repository. |
| Repository override | The settings for one repository. |

**Globally Disable Cache -** From the Shared Cache screen admins can disable all cache functionality for your Trunk Runners.

## Which branches a job uses cache from

| Value | A job uses cache entries from |
| - | - |
| **This branch and default** | Its own branch and the default branch. |
| **All branches** | Its own branch and the default branch, then any other branch in the repository. |

With either value, a job writes only to its own branch. For Bazel, the setting
applies to the action cache.

> [!WARNING]
>
> With All branches, a person who can push a branch can change what the default
> branch builds. Keep **This branch and default** for a repository that releases
> from its default branch. For Nix, keep it if you deploy from Nix builds.

## When a change applies

Trunk reads the settings when a job starts. A job that already started keeps its
settings until it ends.
